Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks are layered limestone formations created by marine sediments over millions of years, with the soft siltstone between layers eroded by wind and water to resemble pancakes. High tides and strong swells force water through the rocks' tunnels, creating spectacular geyser-like blowholes that shoot spray into the air.
